DESCRIPTION:The 2018 RedChairPgh sitwithme event was held in Pittsburgh’s beautiful downtown August Wilson Center theater. More than 200 registered for the 4th annual celebration of women in tech. The evening began with a cocktail reception sponsored by University of Pittsburgh with lots of lively networking and the always-fun photo-booth from ELF Entertainment sponsored by PPG Industries\, ServiceNow and BNYMellon. \nJulia Poepping\, RedChairPGH Board Chair\, thanked Presenting Sponsor\, UPMC\, welcomed everyone and introduced lists of key actions that executives\, hiring managers\, supervisors and practitioners can take to ensure an inclusive and welcoming environment. \nToni Murphy\, Vice President of Business Services Comcast and RedChairPgh board member introduced Ed McCallister\, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer\, UPMC. Toni and Ed talked about the progress we’ve made and the challenges we need to continue to overcome when it comes to creating a truly diverse workplace. \nAudrey Russo\, President and CEO\, Pittsburgh Tech Council them moderated the eveing’s Panel: “It’s Not Fake News: There IS Diverse Talent\, Learn How to FIND Them” \nOn the panel were:\nJanet Smith\, Co-Founder of the Ivy Planning Group\, Priscilla Beale\, Innovation Officer for Bayer\,\nLinda Topoleski The Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s VP of Workforce Programs and Operations\, and Erik Winebrenner Thermo Fisher Scientific VP and Chief Information Security Officer. Some amazing quotable tweets went out during that conversation! \nThe 2018 Scholarship Awardees were then recognized with a professional video sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific. \nFree onsite childcare was provided by flexable.com \nOther event sponsors included Murtech Consulting\, Gateway Health\, Solutions4Networks \nComcast\, fivestar* and RedTree Web Design provided in-kind services to help make the evening possible. \nStudents from University of Pittsburgh Health Information Management school and Triangle Technical were on hand to help with registration.

SUMMARY:2017 Annual RedChairPGH Event
DESCRIPTION:The Redchairpgh 3rd Annual Event took place on November 16\, 2017 courtesy of Truefit in the beautifully redesigned Union Trust Building. The evening began with cold drinks\, hot appetizers and lively networking conversations among the 150+ participants sponsored by University of Pittsburgh Information Technology group and Murtech! The photobooth sponsored by PPG Industries and Accenture provided a fun icebreaker to get teams mugging for the camera. The presentation was held in the 10th floor theater – built over 100 years ago and once the private theater for Henry Clay Frick. The evening kicked off with a welcome and a reflection on the rechairpgh mission\, “to achieve gender equity in the Pittsburgh technology professions”. \nThe evening’s keynote speakers\, Carol Frieze and Jeria Quesenberry\, authors of the book “Women are Kicking Butt in Computer Science” highlighted the initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University’s school of Computer Science to achieve gender equity and a significantly more diverse class overall. Their take-aways; culture and environment play a more important role than gender differences in sustaining a community of women in CS\, be cautious about making changes on the basis of appealing to stereotypes\, this may perpetuate the gender divide\, ensure men and women have similar opportunities for leadership\, visibility\, mentoring and advocacy and finally\, don’t underestimate the value of social events. \nA panel of highly successful women leaders in tech was moderated by Kathleen Lovett of ThermoFisher Scientific\, the presenting sponsor. The audience heard words of wisdom from Pricilla Beal from Bayer\, Lori Cruz of ThermoFisher Scientific\, Michele McGough who founded Solutions4networks\, Antoinette Murphy of Comcast Business and Julie Straub of PPG Industries (photobooth sponsor). \nThe evening featured the inaugural redchairpgh scholarship winners in video interview format. Winners recognized include Ashley Davis of PPG\, Victoria Guscoff of AT&T Mobility\, and Gretchen Smathers of UPMC\, Hyunju Li of Samsung\, Kristin Boehne of Five Star Development\, Amy Deponte of GNC\, and Kimberly Zahler of Highmark Health\, Rachael Hayden of PPG and Shireen Thomas of UPMC. \nThe evening was a great success thanks to the sponsors named above and Forsythe\, solutions4networks\, PNCBank\, turbonomic and Gateway Health. Media Quest and MSM digital took care of the audio visual and video filming.

SUMMARY:2016 Annual RedChairPGH Event
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday November 16th\, 2016\, tech professionals across the region convened to take a seat and take a stand—both symbolically and literally—and show solidarity for RedChairPGH’s second annual event. Setting up shop at the new state-of-the-art co-working space Alloy 26 on Pittsburgh’s Northside\, the event was meant to build and support a local coalition dedicated to increasing diversity in computing and IT industries\, encourage Pittsburgh companies and the tech community to correct imbalances\, and foster a stronger local talent pool. To get the conversation started\, the night kicked off with a lively networking session. Attendees were able to engage with a diverse group of tech influencers\, including representatives from major corporations\, small startups\, grassroots nonprofits\, advocacy groups\, and tech incubators. Attendees were encouraged to show solidarity with women in tech—and strike a pose—in the event’s #sitwithme photo booth. The event’s prolific presenters discussed their experiences overcoming challenges in IT careers at all levels\, and shared practical tools that individuals and companies can use to reverse trends in inequity. Featured guest speakers included: Lenore Blum\, professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University\, Christy Uffelman\, a professional development expert with Align Leadership\, and information technology executives Kathleen Lovett and John Quinn from Thermo Fisher Scientific. Blum spoke about women in computer science at universities and shared her experience from Carnegie Mellon’s Computer Science undergraduate class\, which 48% female—far above the national average of 16%. Uffelman\, an expert in millennial development and women’s leadership\, highlighted development for mid-career IT professionals\, while the Thermo Fisher Scientific team shared the value diversity brings to their organization.

SUMMARY:2015 Annual RedChairPGH Event
DESCRIPTION:Our 2015 event was held at the Pitt University Club. Pittsburgh’s Chief Innoation and Performance Officer Debra Lam spoke on her experience building a diverse leadership team. DDI CEO Tacy Byham highlighted the most critical thoughts\, research\, and best practices from her #LeadLikeAGirl presentation. Microsoft’s Sr. Global Diversity & Inclusion Manager shared their program and successful use of the Red Chair. After hearing from our speakers\, attendees took part in the Red Chair Experience by taking photos with the Red Chair and meeting with the next generation of technology through our student volunteers. Material from NCWIT and local Pittsburgh advocacy organizations was available as well as Tacy Byham’s book.
